A Wagon Train to the Stars

When Gene Roddenberry pitched Star Trek to NBC he likened it as a, "Wagon Train to the Stars," explaining that it would be a cowboy show, however it'll just be set in space. A creative pitch it was but Star Trek purposely didn't follow that simplistic sounding premise once they started filming.

Last night I watched Fox's new show, FireFly and it immediately reminded me of that story about Star Trek. In this case it really does have the cowboy feel to it, down to horses in the shows credits and a story line of a train heist and dealings with a small towns Sheriff. Thankfully, it was anything but simplistic. It was very well written, acted, and produced. I'd say it was as close to perfect as a sci-fi TV show could get.

Yep, my TiVo has a new chore every Friday night.
