Watch Your Web Downloads on TiVo FREE!
TiVo has released a new beta of TiVoToGo that allows you to play some web videos on your TiVo but you'll have to pay $24.95 for the privilege. Support is pretty limited too. Currently it's only .WMV (Windows Media), .MP4 and .M4V (MPEG-4, H.264).
I've been playing with a free (donations are accepted), open source, alternative called TiVo.net. (Download it here.)
TiVo.net allows you to play any video on your TiVo that ffmpeg supports. There is also a very early alpha for podcast downloading in TiVo.net. However, I just point TiVo.net to my podcast directory that iTunes uses and I can grab my videos that way.
TiVo.net is sometimes a bit buggy at times but bug fixes have been posted about weekly and it's definitely usable. I love it!
If you have a TiVo and can figure out TiVo.net, there's not much point in buying an AppleTV. I'm glad its been delayed, it has given me time to think about it and cancel my order for one.
